Feifei: Hi Finn. Im so happy. I finally bought that laptop I was so keen on. Finn: Thats great, Feifei. It took you a long time to decide on the brand, the model... and even the colour, didnt it? Feifei: Yes, I know. But there are so many options on the market... Every computer has its good and bad points, but I followed your advice! Finn: My advice? Feifei: Yes, your very good advice! Let me take the laptop out of the bag and show you... Arent they lovely? Finn: And what on earth are those? Feifei: Those are whistles! Feifei: And this one, too. Finn: Feifei, the laptop is a good one. This is the latest model of a very good brand... And you told me to buy one with all the bells and whistles! Finn: Yes, but when I said that, I didnt mean actual bells and whistles. In English, when you say bells and whistles, you mean something extra, like all the add-ons and gadgets. Feifei: No whistles? And no bells? Finn: Im afraid not. Bells and whistles is todays expression in The English We Speak. Lets hear some examples of how its used. My neighbour is very jealous of me. Ive just bought a car with all the bells and whistles! Its even got a mug holder for my coffee by the dashboard! 仪表盘旁边还有可以放咖啡的杯垫!I dont need a mobile phone with the latest bells and whistles. They add to the cost and all I do is answer calls and send text messages. Feifei: Well, even if you didnt mean actual bells and whistles, Finn, you gave me good advice. Finn: Oh? How come? Feifei: When I left the shop, with my brand new laptop, a mugger tried to steal it from me. Finn: Oh, thats terrible, Feifei! Feifei: Yes, I know. But I managed to unzip my bag, shook the laptop and blew the whistle. A policeman who was nearby heard the noise; he rushed over and arrested the mugger! Finn: Oh, thats brilliant! Well, maybe I should attach some bells and whistles to my laptop, too. Feifei: Yes. A computer with all the bells and whistles is great, I say! Finn: OK. Bye. Feifei: Bye.

And wed all miss you so much. Feifei: I know. But dealing with babies is so much easier. Finn: Well, just dont throw the baby out with the bathwater, Feifei. Feifei: What do you mean?! I know how to take care of a baby. Why would I throw her out? 你为什么让我把她扔出去?(Baby crying)(宝宝哭了)Feifei: See what youve done. Finn: Sorry! Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater is an English idiom which means: dont lose something valuable while were getting rid of something else that we dont want. So I was talking about your job, Feifei. Just because you find it stressful – thats the thing you dont want – dont stop completely and lose whats valuable. Feifei: Ah, I see. So you think my job gives me satisfaction, in spite of the long hours in the office… so I shouldnt give it up. Finn: Thats right. Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater is the expression in this edition of The English We Speak. Now lets hear some examples of how its used. Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater就是本期地道英语节目要学的表达方式。 I know you dont like the dress, but I think if you make a few changes to it, it will look lovely. I know the wallpaper is ugly, but this is a lovely house. We can always redecorate. Feifei: Thank you, Finn. Having colleagues like you who care for me is so important. You know what? I dont want to be a babysitter after all. Finn: Thats the spirit! Feifei: So… heres the baby and… well, the nappies are in that drawer. Finn: Feifei, what do you mean? Feifei: Well, Finn, someone has to take care of the baby. Full of beans 打鸡血Hello, everyone! 我们可以说;full of energy;,不过,更形象地也可以说;full of beans;,which means a lot of energy or enthusiasm. He is 95 years old, but he is always full of beans. He travels around many places with his son. The children were too full of beans of sit still. If someone is full of beans, he/she is very energetic. /201409/329542。

What was it like before? You: People didnt think that much of money before, but rather how high regard for pubilic interest. But now some people only work for money, and they dont care much else. While most people dont work just for money. David: So they dont work just for money, because they work for something else. What else? You: They have high ideals that they are working for the good of the country and for all its citizens. David: Maybe it is not such a good thing that people are more interested in their own self and their own money, as opposed to their interest for the country and the group at large. You: I think it is wrong if people only care about themselves and dont think about the good of the country. David: What other traditions do you think are also in jeopardy to be lost? Id recommend going, flying in to Denpassar, and getting down towards Dreamland beach. Thats at the southern most tip of Bali. The waves there, Im a beginning surfer too, the waves there arent very big, 5, 5, 4 - 5 feet, and just really nice people there. The locals are willing to help you. You meet a lot of Balinese young kids, 12, 13 years old. Theyre singing in the water as they surf. Theyre giving each wave names, so Its a lot of fun and theres no attitude, and people are there just to have fun. Its a good time. Todd: Wow, that sounds nice. Phil: That area of Indonesia is really nice. Lombok is nice too. If you are more wanting to relax, I would go to Lombok, and then go up to Gili Trawangan, which is a small island off the east coast of Lombok. Theres no cars on the island. The electricity is a little dodgy. It might flicker on and off. Food is great. You get fresh fish all the time. Snorkelings nice if you like scuba diving. You can arrange tours through several companies there. But, yeah, I really like Gili Trawangan and I would recommend that to anyone who wants to relax for a couple of weeks. /201307/246747。
