Rice Criticizes Settlement Expansion on Arrival in Israel赖斯抵达中东批评以扩建定居点 The ed States' top diplomat has arrived in the Middle East to try to give a boost to the peace process. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is pushing for a peace agreement before President Bush leaves office in January. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice began her peace mission with harsh criticism of Israel's announcement that it plans to build 1,300 new homes in disputed East Jerusalem. Rice told reporters on her plane that settlement expansion does not build confidence and is an obstacle to peace. The Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. But Israel says it can build anywhere in Jerusalem because it will be the capital of the Jewish state in any final peace agreement. "Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem will remain part of Jerusalem in final status talks, and the truth is everyone understands that," said Israeli spokesman Mark Regev. Israel has announced plans to build some 3,000 new homes in East Jerusalem and the West Bank since peace talks resumed six months ago. Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat says enough is enough. "This cannot stand," said Erekat. "The government of Israel has a choice, either to continue the settlement activity or to continue the peace process. It cannot have both." The settlement issue will be high on the agenda when Rice meets separately with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday. 2 Often, the only clue he has, is from some ancient text. And it is up to him to puzzle out the arcane references and make them fit the modern landscape. Armed only with a walking stick to fend off snakes and rabid dogs, he has walked many thousands of miles, but he has had many successes. After struggling up this forested mountainside, he discovered a long-lost wall. No one had ever noticed it before but once it was part of an ancient Great Wall, too much earlier, and in a completely different location from the wall everyone knows. And the more scientists and archeologists probe, the more mysterious it all becomes. In a lifetime of searching, Chen has discovered thousands of miles of forgotten walls. In fact, if you add up all the walls that we now know about, it comes to a staggering total of 35, 000 miles, almost enough to stretch around the planet twice. But why built so many walls at such an enormous cost? What were the Chinese afraid of? It was said you could smell them coming, even before you heard the thunder of their hooves. Then they were on you, slaughtering, raping, pillaging and burning. Behind them, they left a trail of smoking cities and bleached bones. They were the nomadic hordes of the northern plains, the Huns, Mongols, Manchus, all at war with the settled life of the Chinese. The Chinese were terrified by the nomads and detested their harsh way of life. A famous poem said they have no fields or pastures, only wastes where white bones lie among yellow sands. Nomads live solely off their livestock. Their animals provided every basic need: food, milk, meat, hides for clothes and the yurt - the nomadic tent. Animal dung provided fuel. In this uncompromising landscape, it was the only way to fuel a fire. The harsh climate kept the nomads always on the move, looking for pastures suitable for their flocks. When disease and freezing weather decimated their animals, the nomadic hordes raided the Chinese when they refused to trade with them. China had everything the nomads didn't have, rice, silk, writing and a very elaborate civilization. The Great Wall was a barrier between the civilized world of the Chinese and barbarians.arcane: secret, hidden; mysterious; occultforested: covered with trees, thickly woodedyurt: rounded building characteristic of the Mongols and the Turks of central Asiadung: animal excrement200707/15842

US, South Korean Envoys Discuss Nuclear Talks美韩讨论北韩核问题 The U.S. and South Korean envoys to the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program held talks in Washington late Monday on possible next steps in the disarmament process. A senior U.S. diplomat was in Pyongyang last week. The top U.S. envoy to the nuclear talks says the ed States remains y to continue working with North Korea on the disarmament deal, despite revelations last week that North Korea had apparently been helping build Syria a nuclear reactor. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Christopher Hill spoke to reporters in between sessions of Washington talks with veteran South Korean diplomat Kim Sook, who became the Seoul government's new chief envoy to the nuclear talks earlier this month. Hill echoed earlier remarks by administration officials that the release of U.S. intelligence material on the North Korea-Syria connection need not scuttle the six-party accord, under which North Korea is to scrap its nuclear program in exchange for aid and diplomatic benefits. The U.S. envoy said last week's intelligence briefings for members of Congress had been amply explained and that he had nothing to add on the subject. But he made clear the Bush administration remains willing to deal in good faith with North Korea on the nuclear accord provided Pyongyang does the same. We talked about all the commitments and I reiterated a position that Secretary [of State Condoleezza] Rice has taken on many occasions: that as the DPRK, the North Koreans, complete all of their requirements, all of their obligations, we will certainly complete all of ours," Christopher Hill said. North Korea last year shut down its nuclear reactor complex at Yongbyon in return for energy aid from the other parties to the Chinese-sponsored talks. But the process has stalled over a declaration of its nuclear programs, including proliferation activity, that Pyongyang was to have made by the end of last year. Hill and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Kye-Gwan, reportedly reached a tentative deal in Singapore earlier this month under which Pyongyang, rather than making a declarative statement about proliferation, would acknowledge U.S. concerns about it. The reported arrangement has drawn domestic criticism from some U.S. conservatives, and Hill stressed under questioning here that there is no final resolution of the declaration issue. We are putting together a lot of different elements," he said. "And for this declaration phase, nothing's agreed unless everything's agreed. And we're working very hard to assemble all the elements, and that's why we're having these consulations with our ROK [South Korean] friends." Hill said he introduced the new South Korean envoy to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and that they had discussed last week's three-day visit to North Korea by the State Department's director of Korean affairs Sung Kim, which focused on the declaration issue. 200804/37045

Voters in the southern state of Mississippi are going to the polls in that state's Democratic Party presidential primary. Opinion polls put Senator Barack Obama in first place, but, Senator Hillary Clinton is likely to almost evenly split the state's 33 delegates. More than half of Mississippi's Democratic voters are African-Americans, a segment of the voting population that has favored Barack Obama in past contests and they are expected to help him win Tuesday's primary as well. Obama, whose father was from Kenya and whose mother was white, is likely to win more than half the votes, but Hillary Clinton will take away almost as many delegates. In Democratic contests the delegates are divided proportionally according the number of votes won by each candidate. Clinton is behind Obama by about 100 delegates at this point, but she is counting on a big win in Pennsylvania, which holds its primary on April 22. Polls show she has an advantage there. Mississippi is a poor state and often lands at or near the bottom of national lists on such matters as rural poverty, educational achievement and school financing. Issue of concern for voters include the economy, health care, job creation and the war in Iraq. On the eve of the Mississippi primary, as both candidates appeared around the state, a controversy flared over Clinton remarks that seemed to suggest she would be willing to name Obama as her running mate. I have had people say to me, 'I wish I could vote for both of you.' Well, that might be possible some day," she said. Obama responded by rejecting the notion that he would accept the second-place spot on the ticket with Clinton. I do not know how somebody who is in second place is offering the vice presidency to someone who is in first place," he said. 奥巴马说:“首先,我不明白,在竞选中处于第二位的人怎么会提出,让处于第一位的人当副总统竞选夥伴呢?”Obama is also expressing irritation over assertions by Clinton that he is not experienced enough to take on the job of commander in chief. He questioned how Clinton could see him as a potential vice presidential candidate if she does not believe he is y for such responsibility. Democratic leaders are concerned that such rhetorical skirmishes between the two candidates may help Republicans by giving them ideas on how to attack whichever of the two wins the Democratic nomination. Senator John McCain, who has clinched the Republican nomination, has been able to concentrate on building his team and financial resources for the November election, while the Democrats still struggle to finalize their selection process. 200803/30139

It's a very good buildup toward these kinds of Games and the Championships," said Okeyo. Kenya is to host the Africa Championship games in two years in Nairobi. And he expressed pleasure over Nigeria's bronze medals in the women's long jump and four-by-100-meter relay. Zimbabwe took one gold and three bronze medals in women's swimming, all by Kirsty Coventry in the 100- and 200-meter events. Team leader Thabani Gonye called it a major accomplishment given the small size of the Zimbabwean team. We only brought a team of 13 athletes, for swimming, track and field, cycling, rowing and tennis," said Gonye. "So when we look in terms of people that we have brought we feel as a nation we put up a fairly commendable performance." He added that two younger members placed fourth in the men's long jump and 200-meter race and said he expected further improvements as the younger athletes mature. Other gold medal winners included Cameroon, in the women's triple jump, and Tunisia, in the men's 1500-meter swimming (freestyle) race. Besides Morocco's second-place finish in the men's marathon, South Africa won a silver medal in the men's long jump.
