Hi, everybody. Ive delivered a few hundred of these weekly addresses over the years. And you may have noticed a theme that pops up pretty often: The Republicans who run this Congress arent doing their jobs. And guess what? Congress recently returned from a seven-week vacation. And theyve only got two weeks left until their next one. But theres a lot of business they need to get done first. First, even as were seeing more and more Zika cases inside the ed States, theyve refused to fund our efforts to protect women and children by fighting Zika in a serious way. Second, they still need to provide resources to help the people of Louisiana recover from last months terrible floods, and to help communities like Flint recover from their own challenges. Third, they have made Merrick Garland, a Supreme Court nominee with more federal judicial experience than any other in history, wait longer than any other in history for the simple courtesy of a hearing, let alone a vote. All because they want their nominee for President to fill that seat. And there are plenty of other bipartisan priorities they should finish this year as well. Passing criminal justice reform. Attacking the opioids epidemic. Funding Joe Bidens cancer moonshot. Finishing a Trans-Pacific trade agreement that will support American jobs and boost American wages. And passing a budget that will make sure all of Americas priorities are funded without resorting to shutdown threats and last-minute gimmicks. And none of these even includes some other big priorities that should get done. Its been almost a decade, for example, since Congress voted to raise the minimum wage. None of this thing should be controversial. All of it is within our reach. This is America – we can do anything. We just need a Congress that works as hard as you do. At the very least, we should expect that they should do their jobs, and protect us from disease, help us recover from disaster, keep the Supreme Court above politics, and help our businesses grow and hire. So, if any of these priorities matter to you, let your Congressperson know. And if they still refuse to do their jobs – well, you know what to do in November. Our government only works as well as the people we elect. And thats entirely up to you. Thanks, everybody, and have a great weekend.201609/467565宜昌看男科去哪 031 transport Words Bus train bicycle car boat ship motorcycle van truck tram ferry barge speedboat yacht Coach airplane helicopter balloon minibus cruise ship scooter airport shuttle bus light railway Subway commuter train platform terminal bus/railway station carriage Phrases Use public transport Take a trip in/on a … Take to the air Drive a car Ride a bus Pedal a bicycle Driver’s license Traffic rules Beginner A: do you think we should travel by bus or by train? B; it’s a difficult choice. The train is a litter faster, but much more expensive. A; we could face delays if we travel by bus, thanks to traffic jams. B; buses are more cramped and you can’t walk around. A; that’s true, but I feel that I see more when I travel by bus. B; really? I think you see more traveling by train. a; so, which form of transport do you prefer to use? b; I prefer going by train, ever though it costs more. a: ok them. We’ll go by train. I’m sure we’ll have a good journey. Shall we go to the station and buy the tickets? B: the train aren’t usually full. We can get them on the day we travel. We should buy return ticket because they are much cheaper than getting two singles. A; we should take a packed lunch on the journey. The food they sell on the trains is always expensive. Intermediate A; how do you think the transport system in our city could be improved. B; I think that the public transport system could be made simpler. I never know where the bus routes actually go. The routes seem to twist and turn rather than going roughly in a straight line. A; I think we just need to build more roads. Then there would be more space for cars to drive and we’d have fewer traffic jams. B: if we built more roads, people would just fill them with cars again. I think we should discourage people from using their cars. A; how would you do that? B; I think we should do a few things at once. Improving public transport would encourage people to use that. If we also charge people to use their cars in the city centre, they won’t use their cars as much. A; I don’t know. I think it’s unfair to make drivers pay more money. They aly pay a lot of tax-petrol tax, for example. B; I think that they should pay more tax. Look at the damage they cause to the environment and people’s health by discharging all those exhaust fumes. A; the air would certainly be cleaner if there were fewer cars being used in the city. The problem is that people will see it as reducing their freedom. It well be unpopular. B; that’s a good point. Car owners will probably be against it, but people who use public transport will be in favor of it. /200705/13130美国习惯用语-第64讲:to keep one's eye on the balleye-opener人们把眼睛称为“灵魂的窗户”、“世界的窗户”以及“心灵的窗户”等等。 今天我们先来讲to keep one's eye on the ball。To keep one's eye on the ball这个常用语原先是来自球类运动,如网球、高尔夫球、垒球等。 下面这个垒球运动员说的话就能说明问题:例句-1: "We were playing Chicago there and the crowd was yelling and booing and waving handkerchiefs to distract us. But I kept my eye on the ball, swung as hard as I could and hit a home run. That Chicago crowd sure quieted down as I jogged around the bases." 可是现在to keep one's eye on the ball已经可以应用到一般的事物上了。 于是,他的老板就把他叫到办公室去对他说:例句-2: "Tom, your sales record is way down the past six months. You've only sold 17 cars all this time. You'd better start keeping your eye on the ball, or you'll find yourself looking for another job." Eye-opener有两个意思,一个是表示惊奇,就像下面这个女子所表达的情绪:例句-3: "Of course, John and I have had a few problems, just like most married couples. But I always felt we had a good, solid marriage. So it was a terrible eye-opener when I opened the letter he'd left on the kitchen table and found out he'd run off with his old college sweetheart." 请听下面这个例子:例句-4: "Seeing those color films the astronauts took off the earth on their flight to the moon was certainly an eye-opener. I never realized how beautiful and how lonely our planet looks hanging there in space." 它们是:to keep one's eye on the ball和 eye-opener。To keep one's eye on the ball是集中精力的意思。

It looks as though he's here to buy a fish, too.LH: 对,每个人都有自己穿衣的风格。说不定他会买那条很漂亮的鱼!LL: That's a possibility. Now, come on, forget about that fish and help me pick out a goldfish, the funkier the better.

52: TO BE CANNED / TO KISS UP TOto be cannedto kiss up to今天Michael和李华下了班以后就去逛街。他们边走边聊,李华会学到两个常用语:to be canned和to kiss up to。M: Man, it was crazy at work today!L: 真的?你们办公室今天发生什么事啦?M: My friend George was late again, so the boss canned him!L: 你的朋友George今天上班迟到,你们老板对他怎么了?对他大喊大叫吗?M: No, it's much worse than that. The boss canned him. In other words, the boss fired him!L: 什么? 所以To be canned就是被解雇的意思啊?M: Yeah, here, "canned" is the past form of "to can," which means "to put something in a can," or slang for "to throw something in the trash can".L: 噢,这里canned就是把什么东西扔到垃圾桶。可这跟解雇人有什么关系呢?M: Hehheh, when your boss "cans" you, he's getting rid of you. It is like he is throwing you in the trash can.L: 原来这是一种比喻啊。不过这种说法听起来挺吓人的。Michael, 你觉得George应该被解雇 吗?M: To tell the truth, George was not a very good employee. If I were the boss, I would have canned him too.L: 哎呀,Michael,你这么说你的朋友未免太过份了吧!George又没做坏事,为什么要解雇他 啊?M: Well, George was often very late to work. This month, he came in late a least four times. The boss warned George many times before he finally canned him.L: 看来你一点也不同情George。 M: Hmph. When George was late, it caused me and the other employees a lot of trouble. No one is really sad that he was canned.L: 也许你说得没错。如果每个人都象George这样老迟到,那会给其他人造成多大的麻烦啊。M: Well, you are right and wrong. Because George was canned, we all have a lot more work to do right now.L: 对,希望你们公司会赶快雇一个人来接替George的工作。M: I'm sure they will. Not at all. I'm a good worker, and I kiss up to the boss all the time.L: 你说你工作表现很好,而且你还经常亲你的老板。哎呀,Michael, 你好恶心哦,你的老板 不是男的吗?M: No no no...I said I "kiss up to" my boss. To "kiss up to" someone is to try to be extra friendly to someone so they will treat you well.L: 那你到底是怎么样"kiss up to"你的boss呢?M: Well, when I want to "kiss up to" the boss, I might bring him coffee, or help him clean the office. I also try to say nice things about him and his family, or tell him he just looks really cool.L: 噢,现在我懂了。你不用说的那么好听,"kiss up to"无非就是拍什么人的马屁嘛。哎呀, 真没想到,你还是个马屁精啊。你不怕同事看不起你啊?M: No, not at all. All of the employees kiss up to my boss. Actually, there's nothing wrong with that, because our boss is a really nice guy.L: 如果你的老板真象你说的那么好,或许讨好他也没什么错。M: I Guess kissing up to someone can be useful, but not so that everyone hates you.L: 你说的没错,拍马屁有时候是挺管用的,不过要是搞得人人都讨厌你,那就太不值得了。M: Don't worry about me. I don't want the boss to do anything for me, I just don't want to be canned.L: 其实我才应该向你学几招,去讨好讨好我的老板,也让他对我另眼相看。今天李华学会了两个常用语:to be canned和to kiss up to.To be canned在这里就是被解雇的意思,kiss up to是讨好某人,拍马屁的意思。 Rose: Herbert told me he spent a lot of time 1) composing music in college. Sue: So the music he wrote in college 2) represents the "old" Herbert... Rose: I don't know, but I'm kind of 3) curious. Sue: You haven't listened to it yet?
