Before she became a photographer, Sara Bennett was a public defender, so she thought she knew something about life in prison. But as she followed four women in their transition back to freedom in New York City, she realized she had a lot to learn. The women were all convicted of murder and served between 17 and 35 years, mainly at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County. “I didn’t know that if a loved one dies, you’re allowed to go to the funeral but you’re shackled,” Ms. Bennett said. “I didn’t know what it meant to be ill and grow old in prison.” Ms. Bennett, 60, stopped practicing law full time more than a decade ago, and turned to photography. She accompanied the recently released women — Carol, Evelyn, Keila and Tracy, whose last names Ms. Bennett agreed not to reveal — as they found jobs and housing and reunited with family. She watched as they explored their new freedom and dealt with the lingering restrictions on it, from mandatory drug tests to curfews. Despite these prohibitions, the women relished the little things. “Carol basically lives on one block,” Ms. Bennett said. “She says: ‘This is great. No one is coming in and out. I can lock my door.’ ” Or as Tracy put it to her, “There are no bathtubs in prison.” Ms. Bennett said she hoped the series, compiled in the self-published book “Life After Life in Prison,” would prompt a re-examination of the criminal justice system, which repeatedly denied these women parole, though they had learned trades, earned degrees and had good disciplinary records in prison. “I was very specific about focusing on women convicted of murder,” she said. “I focused on people facing life sentences for violent crimes they committed a long time ago. I think that’s where we really need to focus our attention, because it’s a humanitarian issue; that’s who gets old in prison,” she added. “And they’re the ones least likely to commit crimes when they get out.” The Earth is so hot this year that a limit for global warming agreed by world leaders at a climate summit in Paris just a few months ago is in danger of being breached. In December, almost 200 nations agreed a radical shift away from fossil fuels with a goal of limiting a rise in average global temperatures to well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times while ;pursuing efforts; for 1.5C (2.7F). But 2016 is on track to be the hottest year on record, also buoyed by a natural El Nino event warming the Pacific, according to the U.N.#39;s World Meteorological Organization. The first six months were a sweltering 1.3C above pre-industrial times. ;It opens a Pandora#39;s box,; said Oliver Geden, of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. ;The future debate about temperature targets will be about overshoot.;德国国际与安全事务研究所的奥利弗·戈登说道:“这就像打开了潘多拉的盒子。 Many climate scientists say the Paris targets are likely to be breached in the coming decades, shifting debate onto whether it will be possible to turn down the global thermostat. Developing nations see overshoot as a betrayal of commitments by the rich and a recipe to worsen heatwaves such as in the Middle East this year or a thaw of Greenland#39;s ice sheet that could swamp island states by raising global sea levels. ;There is a risk that #39;overshoot#39; is a slippery slope towards lower ambition,; said Emmanuel de Guzman, secretary of the Climate Commission of the Philippines, which chairs a group of 43 emerging nations in the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). 。Developing nations say overshoot lets world leaders pay lip service to 1.5C while failing to act on pledges made in Paris for a trillion-dollar shift from coal and other fossil fuels towards renewable energies. The 1.5C threshold could be in jeopardy within five years on current trends of world greenhouse gas emissions, led by China and the ed States, and 2C within about 25 years, according to U.N. calculations of the amount of carbon that can be emitted into the atmosphere. Brazilian scientist Thelma Krug, who will lead the Geneva meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), said a ;wholesale transformation; of economies and society will be required to achieve the Paris targets. Many IPCC scenarios in recent years discuss ways to extract heat-trapping carbon dioxide from nature. If applied at a wide enough scale, such ;negative emissions; could reduce temperatures after an overshoot. But there are many pitfalls. The simplest natural aid - planting trees that absorb carbon dioxide from the air to grow - would probably require too much farmland to be feasible. Industrial technologies for extracting carbon from the air are costly and in their infancy. /201608/462562Toothbrush With Death: Man Who Calls Himself #39;Gator Crusader#39; Cleans Gator#39;s Teeth: #39;I Treat Them Like My Kids#39;给鳄鱼刷牙的男人A Florida man who refers to himself as the ;Gator Crusader; has taken the term ;man#39;s best friend; to a whole new level. Meet Chomper, one of the many alligators Michael Womer of Orlando calls his children. ;Alligators are my passion and one true love,; the Florida man told InsideEdition.com. ;The gators are seemingly calm because of the bond I have developed with them.;“鳄鱼是我的热情和真爱所在”,Womer告诉InsideEdition.com。 And, like any doting dad, Womer brushes the deadly reptile#39;s teeth in a posted to his YouTube account. In other s, he can even be seen letting an alligator bite a hot dog out of his mouth in what he calls ;the deadliest recreation of #39;Lady and the Tramp#39;;. He said the gators at the attraction where he works were all rescued from alligator farms, where their ultimate fate was to become wallets or boots, and may be grateful that he saved them. Womer explained that in the 25 years he has worked with alligators, he has learned that the secret to making sure he doesn#39;t become dinner lies in understanding their movements. ;A lot of it has to do with ing their body language and figuring out who is in a good mood that day and would cooperate,; Womer explained. ;I am not naive enough to think they wouldn#39;t hurt me.;“想要读懂它们的身体语言,判断它们是否愿意配合,需要了解很多,”Womer进一步解释。 When he first started out, Womer said he practiced jumping on the alligators and wrestling them, which led to many close calls, including being bitten a few times. ;But since I stopped doing that and focused on training the gators, and truly developing a relationship and understanding their behavior, I have not been bitten,; he said.“后来我不再做这些表演,开始专心训练鳄鱼。 He explained that his greater goal is to sp awareness about compassion toward alligators, who often catch a bad rap for their predator designation.

One sunny morning Shi Dianshou sets off for China’s River of Happiness. “It’s not very happy right now” the 24-year-old environmentalist admits as he drives north from Beijing to inspect the poetically named waterway. Forty two kilometres out of town Shi’s car pulls up beside a putrid rubbish-strewn creek. A black sofa pokes up from its murky waters; a landfill decorates its western bank; and beside another heap of refuse a stray bra hangs lazily from the branch of a tree lending a comic touch to the bleak scene. “I’ve seen this kind of river so many times” complains Shi pacing along the sewage-scented canal to uate the grime. “It makes me feel bad. I’m not happy about it.”Shi在污臭的运河边踱来踱去,抱怨到:“这种河水我已经见过许多次了,这让我感觉很糟糕,我对此很失望。”Shi is one of hundreds of Chinese citizens fanning out across the country in search of what the government has labelled “black and smelly rivers”. Since the project started in February citizens have used smartphones to identify and log more than 1300 locations. They have been added to a pre-existing blacklist of more than 1850 polluted waterways says Shi who works at the Beijing NGO Environmentalists in Action.
