When you think Harley-Davidson, you probably think about leather, beards, and loud engines. Now, though, you can picture a fully electric bike with a digital display. The iconic American motorcycle manufacturer held an event in New York City Monday afternoon showing off Project LiveWire, a prototype of the company’s first electric motorcycle. LiveWire。The new bikes look mostly like a traditional motorcycle, with a few notable exceptions. There is a digital display in between the handlebars where speed and efficiency are displayed. Also, there is no clutch on the left handlebar, since there are no gears. The bike can go from zero to 60 in about 4 seconds, and can reach up to 92 m.p.h. It does not have the traditional loud Harley rev-up sound, though there is a slight hum from the electric engine starting. Harley President Matt Levatich said it would be a few years before the bikes were y to be manufactured and put on sale. In the meantime, it is still tweaking the design and listening to its customers. “We don’t have specific date,” he said. “We need time to incorporate that feedback.“我们还没有确定具体的日期,”他说。 It was a uniquely diverse crowd gathered at the Harley-Davidson HOG 0.00% dealership in Lower Manhattan — a near equal mix of buttoned-up journalists lumbering onto the LiveWire simulator (think a motorcycle stuck in place that can be “revved up” without actually going anywhere) and Harley-Davidson Riders Club Members, many of whom sported well-worn patched vests and beards that would give Rasputin a run for his money. One of those riders, Juan Marmol, said that the new bike ran great, though he was concerned about the relative short range of the bike on a single charge of its battery. The bike can only travel around 55 miles after a three hour charge. “It was awesome,” he said. “The biggest downfall to it right now based on what their telling us is the charge time.”“感觉很棒,”他说。 For hardcore Harley riders who sometimes go up to 400 miles a day, the current battery just wouldn’t work, Marmol said. But he did think that the new bike could change Harley-Davidson’s image and maybe bring some new people into the hog-riding family. “I believe this will change kind of the mindset that Harley’s are for old guys,” he said. Levatich agreed, also noting that Harley would not be forgetting its core customers who want old-fashioned motorcycles. “We’re absolutely not abandoning any of that,” he said. “We’re going to continue to invest in great traditional Harley-Davidson motorcycles. LiveWire has nothing to do with that. It’s all of that, plus opening the doors to some people that are maybe on the outside of the sport, on the outside of the brand.” Of course, Harley-Davidson isn’t the only motor cycle maker exploring electric bikes. In fact, Other companies such as Mission Motors have aly put their models on sale. Harley-Davidson’s roadshow will travel across the ed States this year and next in addition to going to Canada and Europe. The LiveWire Experience Tourcontinues next week in Milwaukee, Wis. /201407/308788

At Carnegie Mellon University, robotics professor David Bourne and some of his students are working on software that enables a robot to cope with uncertainty over where a part will be on the assembly table, and to experiment with ways to put things together until they find the optimum methods. Using this learning method, a robot at CMU is able to pick up a battery from various angles and, sometimes, snap it into a Blackberry-a job most people can do intuitively. As the software improves, robots will learn faster, Prof. Bourne says. Will robots be able to bring production of such things as the iPhone to America? ;That#39;s what we#39;re working towards,; Prof. Bourne said. ;It#39;s not going to happen instantly.; ; In another part of his lab, Prof. Bourne#39;s students are working on sensors that allow a robot to show a human colleague where to place parts so the robot can assemble them. Rodney Brooks, a former Massachusetts Institute of Technology robotics professor who helped launch the Roomba home-vacuuming robot a decade ago as a founder of iRobot Corp., believes industrial robots need to be updated to not only be smaller and nimbler, but also easier to control. His Boston-based start-up, Heartland Robotics Inc., plans to introduce its first robots later this year. Dr. Brooks says they will be affordable for small manufacturers and include controls more akin to an iPhone than a mainframe computer. Dr. Brooks refuses to say much about the machines but the goal is ;to introduce robots into places that have not been automated before, making manufacturers more efficient, their workers more productive and keeping jobs from migrating to low-cost regions.; He plans to make the robots in the U.S. One of Dr. Brooks#39;s former students, Aaron Edsinger, has become a potential rival. When Mr. Edsinger was a doctoral student at MIT six years ago, he programmed a robot to help make a margarita. The point wasn#39;t to replace bartenders but to show that a robot could deal with a somewhat unpredictable environment. Now Mr. Edsinger heads a San Francisco-based company, Redwood Robotics, trying to develop low-cost robot arms for manufacturing and other applications. In work partly funded by Boeing Co. (BA), Julie Shah, an assistant professor in the aeronautics department at MIT, is researching ways for robots to adapt to the differing work habits of human colleagues so they can jointly assemble airplane parts. The idea of people working hand in metal fist with robots ;is becoming less like science fiction every year,; Ms. Shah says. By James R. Hagerty and Miho Inada, The Wall Street Journal;莎表示,人类和机器人协同作业的理念;正在远离科幻小说的范畴,一年比一年变得更为现实。; /201207/189526
