Eighteen million years ago, a series of remarkable events conspired to creat the great barrier reef--the migration of a continent, the might of an ocean, and the full power of the tropical sun. The result is a world that is as tough as it is beautiful. It's been through numerous catastrophies, and everytime, it's balanced back. But the Great Barrier Reef now faces its biggest challenge. 201111/160838。

  • Deal Close For G20 Summit Leaders Keith Graves reports from the G20 summit of world leaders in Washington DC, where Prime Minister Gordon Brown is calling for worldwide cuts in taxes and interest rates to try to rescue the global economy from a deep recession. Between them they represent 90 percent of the world's economic activity, 20 world leaders are trying to find a way to dig the global economy out of the hole. Even their host President Bush admits they can only make a start if that at the summit which kicked off last night to the White House dinner and will end after lunch today, not much time to save the world. This problem did not develop overnight and it will not be solved overnight. But with continued cooperation and determination it will be solved. And whilst they obviously agreed that something must be done and done quickly. They are whatever their final communiqué may say far from in an agreement about what. Mr. Bush is a lame duck president of a nation, blamed by some world leaders for being at the root cause of economic crisis. His successor Barrack Obama's declined the invitation to attend but whether that things are going to get worse before he moves into the White House and wisely keeping his distance from Mr. Bush.Prime Minister Brown is trying to impose his ideas on the summit, lobbying for support with fellow leaders.I’m determined to do everything in my power to make sure that the economy move forward in such a way that people with homes could be more secure, that people with small businesses can get the cash flow that they need and people can be less worried about the effect on jobs. This is my undivided attention. I’m determined we do everything in our part to do the right things. And whilst some leaders including President Bush have reservations about the prime minister’s plans for more cross border regulations to keep international financial institutions on the strait and narrow. One thing they do seem to agree upon is that it's going to get worse before it gets better. 200811/56559。
  • Twice a year, day and night, fall into balance, lasting for nearly equal length. Known as equinoxes, Latin for equal night, they occur in March and September and along with solstices mark the changing of seasons as Earth travels around the sun. Astronomers like to describe the equinox within the conceptual celestial sphere. Here the heavens are projected around the Earth, like an enormous planetarium. The model is bisected by the celestial equator, a projection of Earthrsquo;s own equator. The equinox occurs at the point at which the sunrsquo;s path or ecliptic crosses the celestial equator. In spring it is known as the vernal equinox, and in fall the autumnal equinox. The other two seasonal points on the sunrsquo;s path are the two solstices; in the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice marks the longest day of the year, while the winter solstice marks the shortest. The seasonal aligning of the sun has been more than just a unique celestial event for humankind throughout history. Ancient sites like Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru have well documented solar alignments during the solstices. Similarly, the equinoxes have been associated with some amazing man-made phenomena. In the ancient Maya city of Chicheacute;n Itzaacute;, the great pyramid known as El Castillo is oriented along cardinal axis. During the equinoxes, shadows cast by the railings create the illusion of a writhing serpent body, descending the northern steps where it joins the carved serpentrsquo;s head at the base of the stairway. The cultural significance of the fall equinox and changing of seasons continues today, especially in the northern hemisphere, where the autumnal equinox occurs around harvest season. In fact, the full moon nearest the autumnal equinox is commonly referred to as the harvest moon. In China and other Asian countries, this time is celebrated with the mid-autumnal festival; the origins are linked to the birth of the moon goddess and festival traditions revolve around families with reunions and feasts and special moon cakes. In Jewish culture, thanks for the harvest is given during the week-long feast of the tabernacles or Sukkot. Families eat meals in temporary shelters outside, recalling the Israelites days in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt. 165329。
  • British Leader Warns Global Downturn Could Turn to Recession英国首相:多国实体经济可能衰退 In his first parliamentary question session since last week's European leaders' summit where economics took center stage, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has warned that many countries must brace for recession in the real economy. It is the first time Prime Minister Gordon Brown has publicly acknowledged what many average Britons have felt for months: that the global economic downturn is likely to cause a recession both here and elsewhere around the world. And as Mr. Brown underlined in parliament, it was serious. The Governor of the Bank of England said last night that not since the First World War has the international banking system been so close to collapse and I agree with him," Brown said. "Having taken action on the banking system, we must now take action on the global financial recession which is likely to cause recession in America, France, Italy, Germany, Japan and because no country can insulate itself from it, Britain too." Mr. Brown said he looks forward to attending a summit of world leaders soon to discuss cooperative economic recovery measures. That gathering will be held in the ed States sometime shortly after the November presidential election. With the British economy shrinking, Mr. Brown is facing many of the same problems being felt elsewhere in the developed world, such as rising home foreclosures that have nearly doubled during the past 12 months. In the House of Commons, the prime minister outlined new plans to combat that alarming trend. Mr. Speaker, I can announce today new guidance - new guidance for the judiciary to halt or adjourn court action on repossessions unless alternative options that help the homeowner including extending the terms of the mortgage, changing the mortgage type and deferring payment have been fully examined first of all. We are determined to do everything we can to help homeowners avoid repossessions," he said. But the economic fight back will take time. Mortgage approval rates are down by more than 70 percent this year compared to 2007. Unemployment is rising and that is expected to continue into . And the pound has slipped to a five-year low against the U.S. dollar. 200810/53772。
  • Climate change气候变化Good news at last? The climate may not be as sensitive to carbon dioxide as previously believed气候对二氧化碳的敏感性可能低于先前的预期CLIMATE science is famously complicated, but one useful number to keep in mind is ;climate sensitivity;. This measures the amount of warming that can eventually be expected to follow a doubling in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in its most recent summary of the science behind its predictions, published in 2007, estimated that, in present conditions, a doubling of CO2 would cause warming of about 3deg;C, with uncertainty of about a degree and a half in either direction. But it also says there is a small probability that the true number is much higher. Some recent studies have suggested that it could be as high as 10deg;C. If that were true, disaster beckons. But a paper published in this weekrsquo;s Science, by Andreas Schmittner of Oregon State University, suggests it is not. In Dr Schmittnerrsquo;s analysis, the climate is less sensitive to carbon dioxide than was feared. Existing studies of climate sensitivity mostly rely on data gathered from weather stations, which go back to roughly 1850. Dr Schmittner takes a different approach. His data come from the peak of the most recent ice age, between 19,000 and 23,000 years ago. His group is not the first to use such data (ice cores, fossils, marine sediments and the like) to probe the climatersquo;s sensitivity to carbon dioxide. But their paper is the most thorough. Previous attempts had considered only small regions of the globe. He has compiled enough information to make a credible stab at recreating the climate of the entire planet. The result offers that rarest of things in climate science;a bit of good news. The grouprsquo;s most likely figure for climate sensitivity is 2.3deg;C, which is more than half a degree lower than the consensus figure, with a 66% probability that it lies between 1.7deg; and 2.6deg;C. More importantly, these results suggest an upper limit for climate sensitivity of around 3.2deg;C. Before you take the SUV out for a celebratory spin, though, it is worth bearing in mind that this is only one study, and, like all such, it has its flaws. The computer model used is of only middling sophistication, Dr Schmittner admits. That may be one reason for the narrow range of his teamrsquo;s results. And although the studyrsquo;s geographical coverage is the most comprehensive so far for work of this type, there are still blank areas;notably in Australia, Central Asia, South America and the northern Pacific Ocean. Moreover, some sceptics complain about the way ancient data of this type were used to construct a different but related piece of climate science: the so-called hockey-stick model, which suggests that temperatures have risen suddenly since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It will be interesting to see if such sceptics are willing to be equally sceptical about ancient data when they support their point of view. sensitive adj.
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has given birth to twins, a boy and a girl. It had to be the birth of the year, paparazzi photographers were at the y in Nice in the south of France as news sp that Angelina Jolie had given birth to twins, one girl, one boy. Newspapers wasted no time announcing the happy news as their staff pitched outside the Lenval hospital building, scanning for any sight of happy father Brad Pitt or just about anyone else connected to the event. Jolie aged 33 picked a hospital near the glamorous Promenade des Anglais for the birth. Pitt and Jolie, seen here during their recent visit to the Cannes film festival, named the twins Vivienne Marcheline, and Knox Leon. Marcheline was the name of Angelina’s actress mother who died of cancer last year. The paparazzi were finally rewarded when Jolie's doctor Michel Sussmann along with the mayor of Nice made an appearance on the hospital steps. Sussmann told Reuters both parents and babies were in "excellent health". He said the caesarean section birth had been brought forward for medical reasons. The birth drew a mixed reaction in Nice. Some were caught up in the mood of the moment. “I'm happy for them. It must have been a wonderful occasion. It always is when you have a baby, isn't it?” Others kept a firm sense of proportion. “It's ridiculous. (It's ridiculous, right?) Yeah, absolutely, it’s just two people that had kids and that, just they make far too much out of it.” “Please take care of them, because, with so many children I don't know if you can do that.”The twins bring the Pitt-Jolie brood to six. Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported that the couple had sold exclusive rights to the first photographs of the babies to an unnamed US magazine for million and would give the money to charity. The celebrity couple, known in the media as "Brangelina", moved into a 17th century villa in Provence, France, earlier this year. Penny Tweedie, Reuterscaesarean section:A Caesarean or a Caesarean section is an operation in which a baby is lifted out of a woman's womb through an opening cut in her abdomen.200811/56363。
