Sleep well, sleep betterIf sleep has plunged to the bottom of your to-do list, you're not alone. Although the National Sleep Foundation recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, the average American logs only six hours and 40 minutes. What gives? Blame crazy schedules and, of course, sleeping woes. Before you rush to the drugstore to buy an over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medication, try one of the following natural sleep remedies. "These are safer and have fewer side effects than OTC medications," says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic and medical director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers. Many of these can not only help you fall asleep and stay asleep, but they may also promote muscle relaxation.Magnesium and calciumMagnesium and calcium are both sleep boosters, and when taken together, they become even more effective. Plus, by taking magnesium, you cancel out any potential heart problems that might arise from taking calcium alone. Take 200 milligrams of magnesium—lower the dose if it causes diarrhea—and 600 milligrams of calcium each night.Wild lettuceIf you've suffered anxiety, headaches, or muscle or joint pain, you might aly be familiar with wild lettuce. It's also effective at calming restlessness and reducing anxiety—and may even quell restless legs syndrome. When using a wild-lettuce supplement, take 30 to 120 milligrams before bed.HopsBeer fans will no doubt be familiar with the calming effect of hops, the female flowers used in beer making. For sleep purposes, though, this extract has been widely used as a mild sedative for anxiety and insomnia. Take 30 to 120 milligrams before climbing under the covers.AromatherapyLavender is the trick here, as studies have proven that it aids in sleep. It's also a cheap, nontoxic way to slip into a peaceful slumber. Find a spray with real lavender and spritz it on your pillow before bedtime. Or buy a lavender-filled pillow.MelatoninMelatonin is the hormone that controls sleep, so it's no wonder that it naturally induces sleep. Although some experts recommend taking higher doses, studies show that lower doses are more effective. Plus, there's concern that too-high doses could cause toxicity as well as raise the risk of depression or infertility. Take 0.3 to 0.5 milligrams before bed.Yoga or meditationChoose gentle yoga or stretching, not vigorous power or ashtanga yoga, which could energize you instead. Try easy yoga stretches in bed followed by simple meditation. Close your eyes and, for 5 to 10 minutes, pay attention to nothing but your breathing.L-theanineThis amino acid comes from green tea and not only helps maintain a calm alertness during the day but also a deeper sleep at night. However, green tea doesn't contain enough L-theanine to significantly boost your REM cycles. Besides, you might then wake up to go to the bathroom. Instead, buy a brand called Suntheanine, which is pure L-theanine. (Other brands have inactive forms of theanine that block the effectiveness.) Take 50 to 200 milligrams at bedtime.ValerianValerian is one of the most common sleep remedies for insomnia. Numerous studies have found that valerian improves deep sleep, speed of falling asleep, and overall quality of sleep. However, it's most effective when used over a longer period of time. One caveat? About 10% of the people who use it actually feel energized, which may keep them awake. If that happens to you, take valerian during the day. Otherwise, take 200 to 800 milligrams before bed. Oh the Lin-Sanity! China Has a New Hardcourt Hero美国《华尔街日报》文章:林书豪-中国新一代NBA英雄Move over Yao Ming, China#39;s newest basketball hero is ; Jeremy Lin? Jeremy Lin(林书豪)?Lin, a former Harvard star who went undrafted out of college, gives up 14 inches and roughly a hundred pounds to Yao, the former No. 1 draft pick and recently retired center of the NBA#39;s Houston Rockets. He#39;s also an American by birth, the California-raised son of Taiwanese immigrants. But none of that appeared to matter to China#39;s basketball fans after the second-year player exploded for a career-high 25 points in leading the New York Knicks to a victory over the New Jersey Nets on Saturday then went on to top that effort with 28 points in a win over the Utah Jazz on Monday. Video clips of Lin#39;s performances have circulated widely on China#39;s popular Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo, where the 23-year-old#39;s Chinese name, Lin Shuhao, ranked among the top 10 most searched terms Monday. Images of the 6-foot-3-inch guard outperforming NBA veterans, including All-Star point guard Deron Williams, have garnered him global acclaim, including on Twitter, where the hashtag linsanity has been trending. But he seems to made a particularly big splash with Chinese viewers, some of whom had begun to lose interest in the NBA following Yao#39;s retirement in July last year. ;Nice. Since Yao Ming retired I haven#39;t watched much of the NBA, but now they have him ; Go Lin Shuhao!; one Sina Weibo user wrote in response to a photo of Mr. Lin posted on the NBA#39;s official Weibo feed.;太好了! ;An American born and bred who has nothing to do with Chinese basketball, but Chinese basketball fans love to watch him,; wrote Chinese basketball commentator Yang Yi . ;It#39;s because he#39;s tapped into a dream: an Asian guard using skill and awareness to compete in the NBA.;;一个在美国土生土长的华人对中国的篮球没什么影响,但中国球迷喜欢看他比赛。 ;Lin is the first Chinese-American player in the NBA, and spent his first season with the Golden State Warriors, who signed the undrafted Harvard graduate in 2010 to fill out their roster. He saw limited minutes with the Warriors, but was cheered in arenas around the country, particularly in cities with large Asian communities, as fans came out in droves to cheer their homegrown star. /201202/171976It may be bad for the waistline, but comfort food is good for the soul Comfort food may be bad for the waistline but it is good for the soul, say researchers. A study found that even thinking about mashed potato, chicken soup or chocolate pudding can combat loneliness. It is thought that we choose certain foods when the going gets tough because they remind us of happier times, including childhood meals and family holidays. In an attempt to make a group of volunteers feel lonely, the U.S. researchers asked them to write about a row with someone close to them. Some then wrote about eating a comfort food while others wrote about eating a new food. Finally, participants answered questions about their levels of loneliness. Those who were generally secure in their relationships were able to rescue themselves from loneliness by writing about a comfort food, the journal Psychological Science reports. University of Buffalo researcher Jordan Troisi said: ‘It seems comfort food is a sort of y-made easy resource for remedying a sense of loneliness.’ Cure to loneliness? Certain foods make us remember better times

Bringing lunch to work every day sure does save more than a few bucks and keeps you healthy at the same time. It#39;s such an easy everyday saving trick, and it#39;s a great option for those trying to cut costs on their daily expenses. Here are a few tips that get me through the week。 1.Mental Meal Plan:1. What do you want to eat for the rest of the week? Give it some thought before you make a trip to the grocery store to buy some ingredients. For inspiration, flip through Yum#39;s list of delicious work lunches. While you#39;re grocery shopping, our savvy tricks for saving money at the supermarket。 2.Prep on Sunday:2. Buy all the ingredients you need on Sunday so that you won#39;t have to desperately scramble around the night before. If you#39;re planning on making one dish that you#39;ll be eating all week (such as soup), you can either keep it refrigerated or, depending on what type of dish it is, you can also choose to freeze it in five ziploc packets that you can ration out throughout the week。 3.Keep It Separate:3. If you want to keep your lunch fresh, try to keep the pieces separate and assemble it right before you#39;re having lunch. This works best for meals such as salads and sandwiches - soggy b and vegetables are not appetizing! 4.Lunch Etiquette:4. Cover your food if you#39;re heating it up in the office microwave, because you don#39;t want the smell to linger. And remember to eat your meals away from your desk if they#39;re smelly so you won#39;t bother your neighbors。 It was always women who wanted to settle down and start a family, while men dragged their heels... or so we thought. These days, it seems the ladies are being beaten to it by their menfolk. According to research, men are getting broodytoo. And what is more, single men are more likely to dream of having children than women. The experts believe it’s all down togreater equality. Lead researcher Helen Fisher, of Rutgers University, in New Jersey, said: 'Men today are more like [the female archetype] than we have seen in generations. They are becoming the broody ones, they are more likely to want to settle down sooner. ‘Complicating matters is the change in women’s attitudes towards life and relationships, mostly driven by the huge numbers flooding into the workforce,’ Miss Fisher told The Sunday Times. ‘Women gain self-confidence, self-worth, money and experience through work and want things that men have for years taken for granted.’

[1]Before Dr. Luther L. Terry, then the Surgeon General of the ed States, issued his office's first "Report on Smoking and Health" more than 30 years ago, thousands of articles had aly been written on the effects of tobacco use on the human body. [2] Tobacco companies had countered the reports--which purported to show links between smoking and cancer and other serious diseases--with denials and competing studies. [3] So in 1964, Terry and his Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health knew they were stepping into a major pit of controversy when they announced "cigarette smoking is a health hazard of sufficient importance in the ed States to warrant appropriate remedial action". [4] It was America's first widely publicized acknowledgment that smoking cigarettes is a cause of serious diseases. [5] But the issue wasn't settled in 1964, nor is it settled in 1997, despite literally thousands more studies--and litigation that has forced at least one tobacco company to admit what some activists say they knew all along: cigarette smoke is hazardous to your health. [6] More than 30 years--and more than 20 Surgeon General reports--later, the issue appears headed for settlement in the courtroom rather than the laboratory. So what are the risks? Here's what tobacco's critics say: CANCER [7] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cigarette smoking is responsible for 151,322 cancer deaths annually in the ed States. Most of those--116,920--are from lung cancer. The CDC says men who smoke are 22 times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Women who smoke are 12 times more likely to die from the disease. [8] Statistical studies have long shown that people who don't smoke live longer than people who do and scientists have seen statistically the correlation between smoking and incidences of lung cancer since the 1950s. [9] But a study earlier this year by Gerd Pfeifer of the Beckman Research Institute pinpointed specific carcinogens in cigarette smoke that target parts of a gene aly known to be prominent in some cancers. [10] Pfeifer wrote in Science that cigarette smoke causes changes in the gene p53, which protects against cancer when normal but promotes cancer growth when mutated . [11] Another study, published by the American Cancer Society, said that low-tar cigarettes offered no relief from the potential of cancer, and in fact were responsible for a type of cancer that reaches deeper into lung tissue. [12] Other cancers are also affected by cigarette smoke. An American Cancer Society researcher reported earlier this year that smoking increased men's risk of dying of prostate cancer, while other studies have linked tobacco use to increased risk of other cancers, including throat, breast and bowel cancer. /200809/47194 A Blind BeggarThere was a blind beggar wearing sunglasses and asking for money. A drunk man walked by, thinking the beggar was pitiful, threw him a hundred dollars. After walking a few steps, the drunkard turned around to see the blind man holding the money up to the sunlight to check if it was genuine. The drunk man, feeling cheated, ran back and snatched the money back, ;You#39;re gonna die! How dare you cheat me;;The blind man, not wanting to feel like a cheater, retorted, ;Hey man, I#39;m sorry, I#39;m just here to replace my friend who really is blind. He went to the bathroom, and should be right back; Actually; I#39;m mute.;;Oh, oh, in that case...; whereupon the drunk threw the money back and stumbled away.
